A blocked sewer line could be very expensive, time-consuming and frustrating plumbing issue once you encounter this. There are a lot of reasons for a sewer line to be blocked. Your sewer lines cannot be blocked by a single thing; there might be a lot of items inside it that causes it to be blocked. Here are some items that can possibly be the reason to sewer lines to be blocked.
1. Mud
You might be wondering how a mud can enter your sewer lines. Well, passageways within your lines allow the mud to enter. Illegal connections of pipes and drains from your garden are the most common passageway of soil into the sewer pipe. This can obviously carry a huge amount of dirt that is given access to your sewer line. A break in the pipe could also be a way for mud to enter. Mud can’t be decomposed once they enter your sewer pipe and accumulate the pipe which can certainly block them.
2. Collapsed Line
When old clay pipes and sewer lines deteriorate, they can collapse anytime soon. Since they are buried under the ground, there is a high pressure that can be the reason for the sewer line to collapse especially if the pipe is too weak to handle the pressure. Root intrusion can also cause the sewer line to collapse if the line is strongly damaged by the roots. If they collapse, the passageway of the water can be blocked which can lead to a sewage back-up.
3. Grease or Fatty Substances
Although these substances are in a form of liquid, they can still be the cause of a drain to be blocked. They stick to the interior walls of your pipes once they hardened. This usually happens to kitchen sinks. Hydro jetting and rodding could be a great method to get rid of these substances easily. This can completely eliminate the blockages present in your lines. To avoid this type of issue, avoid washing down fatty substances in your drains.
4. Food build-up
If you are not that mindful of the things that go down your drain, then there is a huge possibility that your drain will be blocked. Some food wastes that can cause your drain to be blocked are large bones, leftovers, granules and peels. Don’t be too confident in draining different kinds of food wastes if you have a garbage disposal. However, you must also be mindful as garbage disposals have limitations too. Know the type of food that can be disposed in the disposal unit and the items that can possibly block them.
5. Improper Waste Disposal
You have to see to it that the items that you wash down in your drains and flush down in your toilet cannot cause blockages as a homeowner. There are cases that being unmindful of the things that enter your drains can be a reason for a blocked sewer line. Things that do not easily dissolve with water must not enter your sewer line as this could be the reason for your lines to be blocked.
